50th Anniversary Celebrations

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part in or supported our 50'h Anniversary Weekend on 5`h and 6t'' February.

A great deal of effort had been made by so many people, and of course everyone who attended during the weekend, members, friends and visitors made this such a memorable occasion.

Without wishing to mention names for fear of leaving anyone out, our thanks must go to Dilys and her helpers for the marvellous displays of flowers around the church and walls. A thank you too, for all the hours spent by Jane and Angela and helpers for putting up such wonderful displays.

Before the weekend, on Thursday, was the Praise Party for the younger children from the church, friends and local children, who took part in a programme of dancing and song, led by entertainer John Hardwick. During the evening the ever-popular tuck shop catered for ever-hungry children.

On Saturday, the Open Day was opened by The Mayor of Dacorum, Cllr. David Smedley, who spent an hour or more looking at the displays. The Pilots groups put on displays of song and dance depicting scenes through the ages. Later, children helped to bury a time capsule in the Manse garden to celebrate the occasion. The capsule site was sealed under a giant stone ha'penny. Traditionally, the Pilots used to save ha'pennies to pay for missionary work.

Later, at 12 - 1.30 p.m., bacon and cheese and pickle rolls and Danish pastries were available, while an endless free supply of teas and coffees was served until 3.00 p.m.

During the final half hour or so, many former church members attended to add an element of the past to the proceedings.

Saturday evening was celebrated with a buffet and music for the younger folk, and about 200 hungry people were catered for.

On Sunday morning a special anniversary service was attended by a congregation of over 160 people. Special guests were 3 former Ministers at St. George's - Kenneth Bell; John Chisholm and Charles Martin, who gave the sermon. He aptly underlined the Church as the chosen people of God - not the building. The Rev. Kenneth Bell cut the anniversary cake, which we were able to share after the service, with tea and coffee. This, too, was a good time to catch up with past friends, some of whom had travelled from Wales and Scotland.

Songs of Praise in the evening saw the church full to sing the top ten favourite songs (see the list below). This was a fitting and inspiring climax to the anniversary weekend, with a theme of oneness and fellowship linking members and friends.
